Chamber pots were kept under the bed and collected urine during the night. When they were full, the pots were emptied into a pit usually in the garden or cellar. Sometimes peasants even defecated right into rivers and streams.  For royalty living in castles, a toilet was a piece of wood covering a hole in the floor. This hole sent the waste directly into the castles moat.
